When a child comes to you with concerns about bullying what is your school's policy on how to handle this type of situation?
As a first year teacher, I have experienced a lot of my resource students getting bullied by their peers. Not only have I seen students get bullied, but I have witnessed some of my students doing the bullying. If I have a student come to me with concerns about bullying, my school's policy is to bring the awareness to the student's counselor. I usually collaborate with my counselor, and sometimes my assistant principal about the bullying that has occurred. I do find that sometimes the student does not want to talk to anyone else beside their teacher about the bullying. So, if the bullying is with the student and another student in the same class, I tend to sit them away from each other, and not to allow them to engage in conversation unless it is polite and kind. This usually works, but I have had problems with certain students continuously bullying others and needed to be placed on a behavior plan. Overall, I find that my counselor is the one with the best advice on bullying and how to handle the situations.

Hi Phalen,
ReplyDeleteI am glad your counselor can be a resource. I also find that my students do not want to tell anyone else but me. Within a group of students that have been together for years, struggling together, it could be easier to see persistent bullying. It is important for us as educators to find ways to help them work together positively and encourage each other. I think your sharing positives at the beginning of class helps with building the sense of community. Thank you for sharing.
