[[Have you witnessed staff acting in an unprofessional
manner? If so, what can you do to avoid pitfalls associated with
unprofessional behavior?]]

I have seen staff acting in an unprofessional manner before. I have seen staff treating students poorly, or I have seen staff saying things to kids when they shouldn’t. For instance, one staff member has gotten in trouble discussing gun violence, even though our principal has told us not to engage in conversation with students about it. It is really easy to say the wrong thing to students, or to make them more nervous than they may already be. In order to avoid these pitfalls, I always talk to my principal first. We have open communication and she has worked a long time in the education system, she is wise and knows exactly what to do and what not to do. In this instance, she told the staff not to engage in this conversation and to go on with our lessons. If I am unsure of a topic with the students, or if the students bring up a subject, I always turn towards my principal for advice. Being a new teacher I can see how easy it is to mess up.

  1. Hi Phalen,
That makes sense that it can be a bit tricky to navigate difficult topics with students. Sometimes what we mean to say comes out different than we anticipate. I remind my students that I am open to talk to anything with them, but I also remind them that I am a mandated reporter, in case they tell me something like that. Sometimes I find that students just need to get it off their chest, rather than get a response from me. Thank you for sharing. I am glad you have someone you trust at your school to ask about such things.
