What would you want others to understand

about the impact of poverty on children and learning?

I would want others to understand that poverty can effect children and learning. If the child comes to school hungry, or had to sleep in a car overnight because mom and dad got evicted, or something happened, than the student may go throughout the school day with an attitude, depression or deeper issues. This can cause them to have problems in the classroom, whether it is attitude towards their teachers or peers. It is important to understand that not all kids come from loving homes, or even a home for that matter. Being a new teacher I realize how many of my students have family problems and their are financial matters being dealt with. Some of the kids miss a lot of school because mom cannot pay for her car and she can't take the kids to school anymore. There are a lot of problems students face, and poverty can be one of them.
